Fudong Temple in Jianshui

Fudong Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Fudong Temple is located at No. 62 Taishi Lane, Jianshui County, Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province, by the side of Xiaogui Lake. It was first built before the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty and rebuilt in the 28th year of the Guangxu reign (1902).

Fudong Temple became widely known along with Xiaogui Lake because the Ming Dynasty Jiajing-era top imperial scholar Yang Shen once lived there. In the 24th year of the Guangxu reign (1898), the Lin’an Prefect He Zongzhang also had a stone engraving of Yang Shen’s portrait replicated on a stele at Fudong Temple and inscribed a poem. It is now the only surviving stone engraving of Yang Shen in Yunnan Province.

Yang Shen (1488–1559), originally from Xindu, Sichuan (now Xindu District, Chengdu City), courtesy name Yongxiu, art name Sheng’an, was the son of the famous Ming Dynasty Prime Minister Yang Tinghe and was regarded as one of the Three Great Talents of the Ming Dynasty. At the age of nineteen, Yang Shen passed the Sichuan provincial examination to become a juren (recommended man), and at twenty-four, he took the palace examination, becoming the only top imperial scholar from Sichuan during the Ming Dynasty.
