Introduction:

The Shima Temple Grottoes are situated north of Shimacun Village in Dazhai Town, Xiyang County. They lie east of Shima Mountain and west of the Shima River. The temple complex includes both caves and cliffside sculptures. Carving of the caves and cliff carvings began in the third year of the Yongxi era of the Northern Wei Dynasty (534 AD) and continued through the Sui and Tang dynasties.

There are currently three caves preserved, with a total of more than 1,300 statues distributed across seven cliff faces on three massive rocks. The highest point of the cliffs reaches 7 meters, and the total length is over 70 meters. Most of the statues were carved during the Northern Wei Dynasty, with a few from the Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang periods. The figures include Buddhas, Amitabhas, bodhisattvas, guardian warriors, attendants, and donors. The Buddha statues feature smooth ushnishas and are dressed in wide, tied robes. Bodhisattvas wear tall crowns with flowing scarves draped over their shoulders.

The Shima Temple Grottoes are generally well-preserved, maintaining much of their historical appearance. They prominently reflect the fusion of foreign artistic styles with traditional Chinese artistry, resulting in a uniquely styled Chinese sculptural art form. The statues are proportionate, exquisitely carved, and feature a rich variety of subjects, making them a remarkable collection of historical and artistic value.

In May 2013, the Shima Temple Grottoes were designated as part of the Seventh Batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
