Diqing Prefecture Museum

The Diqing Prefecture Museum is a national AA-level tourist attraction.

The Diqing Prefecture Museum is located on No. 3 Road in Shangri-La and was built in 1996. It houses artifacts unearthed from the Gordon Neolithic Culture site within Weixi Lisu Autonomous County, bearing witness to human habitation and reproduction in Diqing as far back as six to seven thousand years ago. Stone coffin tombs and accompanying burial objects unearthed from Yongzhi, Nagu, and Shidi in Deqen County indicate that around 2,300 years ago, the ancestors of the Tubo people had already created a rich indigenous culture here.

　On February 25, 2007, construction began on the new building of the Diqing Prefecture Museum to meet the development needs of the museum. The new museum is situated south of the Sun-Moon Square in the Dukezong Ancient Town, with a main building area of 5,600 square meters. The new museum will comprehensively showcase the nature, history, culture, and achievements of the past fifty years of the autonomous prefecture in the distinctive Tibetan region of Yunnan through four exhibition halls: “Natural Shangri-La,” “Historical Shangri-La,” “Cultural Shangri-La,” and “Shangri-La Today.”

　At the same time, the Diqing Prefecture Red Army Long March Museum was constructed north of the Sun-Moon Square in the Dukezong Ancient Town. Once completed, this museum will serve multiple functions including patriotic and revolutionary tradition education, tourism visits, cultural relic collection, and academic research.

　The completion and use of these two exhibition venues will add a beautiful new landmark to Diqing.

Best Time to Visit:

Diqing enjoys a cool climate year-round, with an average annual temperature between 5–17°C and a maximum temperature of around 25°C. Starting from November, temperatures in Diqing become relatively low, with the minimum reaching as low as -27°C. Spring, summer, and autumn are all suitable seasons for visiting.
