Pianma is the only provincial-level open port in Nujiang Prefecture, situated in the western foothills of the Gaoligong Mountain National Nature Reserve.

Pianma is located in the western part of Lushui County, bordering Myanmar to the south, north, and west, and is just 200 kilometers away from Kachin State’s capital, Myitkyina. The Pianma border tourism area features dense primeval forests that are fascinating, idyllic pastoral landscapes, and distinct vertical vegetation distribution due to its layered climate. The Pianma border tourism area offers a variety of attractions and unique scenery, including the Pianma Anti-British Memorial Monument (Museum), Fengxue Pass, the mysterious Tingming Lake, wreckage from the Hump Route airplanes, and borderland pastoral views. On the way from Lushui County to Pianma, you’ll find the Yaojiaping Mountain Villa within the Gaoligong Mountain Nature Reserve. Surrounded by dense forests and blessed with a pleasant climate, it is a summer retreat in the Nujiang Gorge. Half a century ago, from May 1942 to August 1945, in southwestern China, the Chinese and American peoples fought shoulder to shoulder against Japanese fascism, engaging in a unique struggle and opening up an international strategic air supply route known as the “Hump Route.” Over 2,000 aircraft were deployed, establishing one of the deadliest “routes of death” in aviation history between Yunnan and Dinjan, India, transporting more than 800,000 tons of military supplies for China’s anti-Japanese war efforts. During this time, a total of 609 planes crashed and nearly 2,000 pilots lost their lives. To this day, many aircraft wrecks remain scattered across the Gaoligong Mountain area.

On the thirty memorial plaques for Chinese air force martyrs of the Anti-Japanese War, a total of 3,300 names are engraved, including 2,200 Americans. These young American pilots gave their lives for the skies of China. Every Chinese person holds them in high reverence. They left behind nothing, except for these names on the memorials. To visit the wreckage of Hump Route Plane No. 53, you can take a bus from Liuku to Pianma and return, covering a total distance of 180 kilometers.

Pianma Town: [Introduction to Pianma Town] Pianma Town covers an area of 153 square kilometers. It connects to Luzhang Town to the east, stretches 24 kilometers from north to south, and borders Myanmar to the south, west, and north, with a 64.44-kilometer borderline. It serves as a key transportation and commercial hub along the northern section of the China-Myanmar border. The town administers four village committees—Pianma, Gulong, Gangfang, and Piansihé—as well as one urban community neighborhood committee, Jinglang. It has a permanent population of 1,740, with the floating and temporary population reaching up to over 40,000 at its peak and around 20,000 normally. In 1991, Pianma was approved by the state as a provincial-level open port.
