Tengchong Yunfeng Mountain

Tengchong Yunfeng Mountain is a national AA-level tourist attraction.

Yunfeng Mountain is located in Ruidian Township, about 50 kilometers northwest of Tengchong County in Baoshan City, Yunnan Province. With an elevation of nearly 3,000 meters, it resembles a bamboo shoot and is one of the more typical granite landform landscapes in southern Yunnan. Traveling north from Tengchong by car, those with sharp eyes can easily spot this extraordinary mountain—50 kilometers from the city—towering above the surrounding ranges from as far as 10–20 li away.

Upon entering Yunfeng Mountain, the only thing that immediately captures the eye—and elicits widespread awe—is the precarious "Three-Turn Cloud Ladder." With over 2,700 stone steps hewn into the cliffs and carved along the precipitous rock face, these steps follow the mountain’s natural contours and guide visitors up to the breathtaking heights of 2,448 meters above sea level. When Xu Xiake visited here in the past, he wrote of hearing "the chirping of hundreds of monkeys echoing through the mountain." Though the monkey calls have long since faded, those “echoing sounds” now come only from startled or thrilled visitors letting out exclamations of fear or excitement—fortunately, safety chains are installed along the ladder to ensure a thrilling yet secure climb.

At the summit of Yunfeng Mountain stands a Taoist temple of the same name, originally built during the Ming Dynasty. Nestled against the mountain and following its contours, the temple complex includes various halls and pavilions dedicated to deities such as Lü Dongbin, Doumu, Laozi, and the Jade Emperor. With its upturned eaves and wind-swept cliffs, it feels like a heavenly paradise.

Once you reach the summit of Yunfeng Mountain, whether you’re watching the sunrise, admiring the clouds, or taking in the mountain vistas, your spirit will be stirred and you’ll often experience that marvelous sensation of “floating as if immortal.” The longer you stay and gaze, the more you’ll find yourself unconsciously merging with nature and becoming part of the landscape. Perhaps this is what Laozi meant by the concept of “the unity of man and nature”!
