Geothermal Scenic Area

Tengchong is a well-known geothermal scenic area in China, boasting extremely abundant geothermal resources. The most spectacular geothermal attraction is the Tengchong Geothermal Spring Cluster, also known as Rehai (Hot Sea), located about 20 kilometers from Tengchong County, covering an area of approximately 9 square kilometers.

Throughout the scenic area, you can find various types of gas springs and hot springs—more than 80 in total—including landmarks such as the Bathhouse River Waterfall, Cracked-Mouth Fountain, Lion’s Head, Beauty Pool, and Big Boiling Pot. Among them, 14 spring groups have water temperatures exceeding 90°C, and boiling thermal springs gush out vigorously everywhere. While hot springs can be found in many places around the world, few are as extensive in area, numerous in springs, and effective in therapeutic benefits as the Tengchong Rehai.

There is also a beautiful myth associated with Rehai: In ancient times, the region was cold and harsh, bringing great suffering to the people. A kind old man endured many hardships in search of a solution, determined to turn the land into a warm and fertile place. Eventually, his sincerity moved the gods, who granted him a magical pearl to hold in his mouth. Feeling intense heat, he drank several rivers dry in one breath and eventually transformed into a small dragon that spewed hot water. Wherever he rested, countless hot springs sprang up. Since then, the area has enjoyed year-round warmth, lush pastures, and bountiful harvests.
