Among the 99 volcanic cones in Tengchong, the most renowned are the Greater and Lesser Xiaokong Mountains, situated 23 kilometers from the county town in Mazhan Township. They are the main scenic areas of the Tengchong Volcanic Geological Park. The two mountains are just a few hundred meters apart, resembling twin sisters born together. Both are truncated cone-shaped volcanoes, leaving behind wide craters at their summits that resemble cauldrons after eruptions. Dakong Mountain earned its name for its towering, sky-piercing presence, standing at an elevation of 2,072 meters with a volcanic cone height of 100 meters, a crater diameter of 140 meters, and a depth of 40 meters. Xiaokong Mountain is named for its short yet graceful appearance and lush greenery, with an elevation of 1,937 meters, a relative height of 40 meters, a crater diameter of 150 meters, and a depth of 47 meters.

The aerial parachuting performance during the first Tengchong Volcano & Hot Springs Cultural Tourism Festival in Yunnan had Xiaokong Mountain’s crater bottom as its landing target. The site’s swirling and ever-changing air currents made for a spectacular sight.

1. Shuttle buses are available directly from Tengchong County Town, with a fare of 5 RMB per person.

2. Take Bus No. 6 to Sanjiaodi, then transfer to a minibus to the Volcano Park, with a fare of 7 RMB.

3. Take a taxi directly to the park entrance, round trip for 60 RMB.
