Demjiang Marea Gorge The Demjiang Marea Gorge stretches 25 kilometers in total and is approximately 15 kilometers from the seat of Quankou Township. To the west, it connects with the scenic Four Heads Gorge of Wuchuan County, and to the east, it links up with the national-level nature reserve — the Mayanghe Scenic Area. The Marea Scenic Area is 2 kilometers from Mayanghe and 10 kilometers from Fengle River. To the east lies a 3,600-mu chestnut base, and it is about 1 kilometer from the artificially planted grassland for animal husbandry in Quankou Township. As we drove toward the area, vehicles shuttled back and forth between the mountain ridges. When our car gradually descended into a low-lying area, within less than 100 meters, a secluded valley appeared, stretching deep from east to west — this was the scenery of the Dayuan Marea Gorge. The mountains here are steep, beautifully shaped, and spectacular in form. Looking down from the mountaintops, some peaks resemble bamboo shoots emerging from the earth, others look like ships sailing on water (boats on the sea), and some resemble rocket noses soaring into the sky... Observing the gorge from its bottom along the valley, the eastern side appears like walls of silver and copper, or like an array of artillery shells. Especially those mountain masses that rise gradually halfway up the valley are extraordinarily unique — sometimes they look like towering pagodas, other times like eagles spreading their wings, or immortals holding up jugs... Moreover, every cliff and precipice features a spectacular mural. Slightly closer, you can hear birds chirping from both sides of the gorges, filling your ears, as if you’ve entered a paradise inhabited by countless birds. Walking down to the bottom of the gorge and looking up, you see only a sliver of blue sky; looking down, a clear stream winds beneath your feet, its waters so transparent that fish seem to be swimming through the air. In addition, the riverbed is formed entirely of a single piece of stone, the channel is narrow, and the water flows swiftly, forming clusters of splashes on the rapids — offering a uniquely charming scene. It’s particularly worth mentioning that below the confluence of the two rivers, above Heiying Pond, there is a waterfall about 30 meters high and 3 meters wide cascading down the rock face, directly into Longtan Pool. Though it cannot be compared to the Huangguoshu Waterfall, it is still a rare and spectacular sight within the province.
