Taohuajiang bamboo leaves are a specialty of Taojiang County in Yiyang City. Taohuajiang bamboo leaves are not made from actual bamboo leaves but are tea leaves from a tea plant whose leaves closely resemble bamboo leaves in shape. Developed in the 1980s by the Taojiang County Tea Research Institute, they are named “Taohuajiang Bamboo Leaf Tea” because of their flat, elegant appearance, greenish luster with hidden fine hairs, and bamboo leaf-like shape. Taohuajiang Bamboo Leaf Tea is a type of green tea, produced entirely using traditional green tea processing techniques. Among the producers of Taohuajiang Bamboo Leaf Tea, Zhujia Village is a leading name.
Taojiang County has a long history of tea cultivation and a rich tea culture. “Taohuajiang Bamboo Leaf” is a nationally recognized geographical indication agricultural product, a well-known and award-winning traditional brand. By hosting the “Taohuajiang Bamboo Leaf” Harvest Festival, the region promotes and spreads Taojiang’s tea culture, boosts tea sales, and helps the fragrance, charm, and prosperity of Taojiang’s tea industry spread far and wide.
It was rated as one of Hunan Province’s Famous Teas in both 1988 and 1992, and is included in tea publications such as the China Tea Dictionary and China Tea Spectrum. In September 2020, “Taohuajiang Bamboo Leaf” successfully passed the expert review for National Agricultural Product Geographical Indication registration, becoming another national GI agricultural product of Taojiang County.
