The mahjong champion of Matsu's first year of gaming tourism can win NT$1.5 million.

After Matsu's gaming referendum passed with 1,795 votes to 1,341 on July 7 this year, to promote the inaugural year of gaming tourism, the Lienchiang County Government Tourism Bureau specially organized the First Matsu Gaming Tourism Year Mahjong King and Queen Competition. This mahjong tournament held in Matsu is the first official government-sponsored gaming event, with total prize money reaching NT$2 million, and the champion alone can take home NT$1.5 million.

The gaming competition schedule is set to start in January 2013, with the finals on February 3, 2013, also just before Lunar New Year, allowing winners to secure good fortune and celebrate the new year joyfully. Registration is now open, with the registration hotline 02-2503-4898 and an entry fee of NT$1,000.

In addition, to build Matsu’s image as a gaming and seaside tourist destination, the Lienchiang County Government Tourism Bureau launched a four-month Matsu Winter Tourism Promotion Campaign starting in November. In addition to Uni Air offering discounted flights for winter tourism in Matsu, the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications is also providing travel subsidies. A 2-night, 3-day itinerary starts at NT$8,400 for sports and wellness packages, NT$7,490 for military family visit packages, NT$5,000 for gaming competition packages, and NT$6,360 for "Flowers Bloom" movie-themed packages.
