Building the nation’s tallest Christmas tree — New Taipei City’s Christmas Town brings joy for a whole month

As December arrives, bringing a strong festive atmosphere, various celebrations are being launched across the country. To celebrate Christmas, New Taipei City will hold the 2012 New Taipei City Christmas Town event from December 1 to January 6, 2013. In addition to expanding the decoration area from last year’s Xinzhuang Special Zone to the 10,000 Ping Park, this year’s Christmas tree will especially use an LED full-color screen to create a 35-meter-tall, LED Christmas tree — the tallest and only one of its kind in the nation this year. Each light can display 256 different colors, and through variations in brightness plus animated effects such as snowflakes, lasers, flowing animations, and radiant beams, it can transform into the shapes of hundreds of Christmas trees. The tree will be lit on December 1.

This year’s series of events at New Taipei City Christmas Town will kick off on December 1 with a theme party and family fun fair at Civic Square. The activities include parent-child challenge games, Christmas impersonation shows, international dance performances, and a baby creative Christmas costume show, among others. The popular “Apple Sister” will also join in to dance and take photos with children. To let newborns experience their very first Christmas, the New Taipei City Government has prepared limited-edition handmade bibs to give to babies under 18 months who visit the fair on December 1 and 2. Just take a sticker photo of your family in the specially designed Christmas frame at the on-site photo booth — the first 102 participants will receive a handmade bib. This year’s Civic Square also features a variety of amusement facilities. In addition to the nation’s tallest dazzling Christmas tree, there will be a carousel and a space shuttle. The square’s original large pillars have even been transformed into the chimney of a gingerbread house. Around the square, snow houses will be set up, reindeer made from driftwood will be displayed, and a small mountain of shiny Christmas gifts will be stacked up.

 

In addition, on December 8 and 9, concerts themed around indigenous culture — “Original Band Heroes: Who Will Rise to the Challenge?” and “Joyful Christmas: Indigenous Dreams of Happiness” — will feature the melodious voices of indigenous performers singing out historical memories. On December 15 and 16, the New Taipei City Symphony Orchestra, directed by Liao Jiahong and featuring the “Water Shadow Dance Troupe,” will present newly adapted and original pieces such as “Christmas Broadway” and “Christmas Waltz.” On the afternoon of December 23, a street parade will take place, followed by a Christmas concert at Civic Square that evening, bringing the Christmas month activities to their climax. On the evening of December 24, a “Silent Night Charity Gala” will be held to spread peace and joy throughout the Christmas Town.
