Once praised as the “Little Shanghai” and known as the “Pearl of the Qingshui River,” Xiashi Ancient Town boasts picturesque scenery and a rich cultural heritage. It is famed as China’s hometown of red garlic, zinc-selenium rice, and the Xiashi dog breed. It is also home to one of the world’s top and Asia’s finest canoe slalom bases.

In the 13th year of the Jiaqing reign (1808 AD), Xiashi was established as a trading port. By the Republican era, it had developed into a bustling market town with water and land docks, serving as an important distribution hub for supplies in central Guizhou. The town was teeming with merchants, caravan teams, shops, warehouses, guild halls, and restaurants that operated day and night, earning it the nickname “Little Shanghai.” The western bank street still preserves the large and small stone-paved wharfs built in 1779 during the 44th year of the Qianlong reign, along with historic sites such as the Yuwang Palace, Guanyin Pavilion, ancient temples, traditional residences, and old alleyways. The Guanyin Pavilion, nestled halfway up Guanyin Mountain in Qingjiang Village and built against the hillside, remains well-preserved and attracts many worshippers. The tomb of Wu Chuansheng, a general who fought in the anti-Yuan and Protect-the-Nation Movement, is located at Baoyangzhou, just 1.5 kilometers from Xiashi.
