Introduction to a comprehensive library. It was originally established in 1947 as the "National Roosevelt Library," later underwent renovation and expansion, and was successively renamed the "Southwest Library" and "Chongqing Municipal Library." In May 1987, it adopted its current name. The library has buildings covering a total construction area of 14,478 square meters. It is one of the top ten libraries in China. By the end of 1987, it housed a collection of over 3.1248 million volumes, including 2.306 million Chinese books (of which more than 450,000 were thread-bound volumes), over 170,000 foreign language books, 600,000 bound periodicals, and a variety of other documentary materials. The library houses a general reading room, a periodical reading room, a natural sciences reference room, a self-study reading room, a United Nations documents reading room, an internal documents reading room, a social sciences reference tools room, a Hong Kong and Taiwan publications reading room, as well as two lending desks for books and periodicals. Chongqing Library possesses a relatively complete collection of wartime edition books and a systematically organized collection of United Nations materials, both of which enjoy a certain level of influence both domestically and internationally.
