Chongqing Medical University

Chongqing Medical University, originally named Chongqing Medical College, was established in 1956. It was formed by the relocation of departments from Shanghai First Medical College (now the Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University) to Chongqing. In 1985, it was renamed to its current title. The university has been under the administration of the Ministry of Health and the People's Government of Sichuan Province, and is now under the administration of the People's Government of Chongqing Municipality. After more than fifty years of development, Chongqing Medical University has become a key local university with a complete talent cultivation system covering “Bachelor’s–Master’s–Doctoral–Postdoctoral” levels.

The university covers an area of 4,446.7 mu, with a building area of 950,000 square meters. Its total assets amount to 5.06 billion yuan, including 983 million yuan worth of teaching, research, and medical equipment, and it has a collection of 1.23 million books.

The university currently comprises 11 colleges: the Graduate School, the School of Basic Medical Sciences, the School of Clinical Medicine, the Second School of Clinical Medicine, the School of Pediatrics, the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the School of Public Health, the School of Management, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Stomatology, and the School of Nursing, as well as 6 departments (divisions): the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, the Department of Biomedical Engineering, [unnamed department], the Department of Medical Imaging, the Foreign Languages Department, and the Physical Education Department. The Third Affiliated Hospital and the University Town Affiliated Hospital are under construction. There are also 5 non-directly affiliated hospitals and 15 teaching and internship hospitals.

The university has 23,358 students, including 364 doctoral students, 2,243 master's students, 15,932 undergraduates and junior college students (higher vocational), 4,305 adult education students, and 514 international students.

The university has 4,708 staff members, including 288 full professors and chief physicians (senior professional titles), 789 associate professors and associate chief physicians (associate senior titles), and 1,546 lecturers and attending physicians (intermediate titles). The university currently has 4 national key disciplines and 43 provincial key disciplines; 1 national engineering research center, 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 1 jointly built provincial-ministerial laboratory, and 15 provincial key laboratories (3 from the Municipal Science and Technology Commission, 6 from the Municipal Education Commission, and 6 from the Municipal Health Bureau). There are 11 research institutes, 4 research centers, and 20 laboratories. The university has 3 postdoctoral research stations, 2 enterprise postdoctoral research workstations, 2 first-level doctoral disciplines, 26 second-level doctoral disciplines, and 40 third-level doctoral disciplines; 6 first-level master's disciplines, 53 second-level master's disciplines, and 67 third-level master's disciplines; 26 second-level doctoral degree authorization points and 53 second-level master's degree authorization points; and 185 doctoral supervisors.

Over the years, the university has undertaken high-level scientific research projects such as the National “Sixth Five-Year Plan” to “Ninth Five-Year Plan” Science and Technology Key Projects, the National Natural Science Foundation Key Projects, the 973 Program, the 863 Program, the National Outstanding Youth Fund, the National New Drug Fund, and the Ministry of Education’s Cross-Century Talents Fund. It has also participated in international cooperation research projects. According to an analysis report by the China Science and Technology Information Institute and Information Analysis Center on the 2005 paper retrieval results, the university ranks 42nd among all types of universities nationwide in terms of publications in important domestic journals. The university publishes several journals, including the Chongqing Medical University Journal, the Chinese Journal of Hepatology, the Journal of Clinical Ultrasound in Medicine, the Journal of Pediatric Pharmacology, and Medical Education Exploration, all of which are publicly distributed both domestically and internationally. Since 1978, the university has won 520 awards for scientific and technological achievements at the national, ministerial, and provincial levels, including National Science and Technology Progress Awards and National Technological Invention Awards. The university-developed Focused Ultrasound Tumor Therapy Equipment (ultrasound-focused knife) is a world-first innovation and China’s first large-scale medical device with completely independent intellectual property rights. Since its industrial application, it has been used in over 30 large hospitals across the country and exported to countries such as the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore.

Since the reform and opening-up, the university has established cooperative relationships with universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Russia, France, Germany, Australia, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, and Hong Kong, involving scholar exchanges, further studies, academic collaboration, and scientific research. It has appointed 98 medical experts from the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, Australia, Sweden, the Netherlands, Thailand, and Hong Kong as honorary professors and guest professors.
