The Former Site of Zhongshan Hospital is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

This is Zhongshan Hospital, which was once the private Yilin Hospital established in 1935. The founder of Yilin Hospital, Li Yiming, was the first graduate in surgery from the Medical Department of West China University. The building of Yilin Hospital was modeled by Li Yiming after a building at West China University and was one of the three tallest buildings in Chongqing at the time. With its traditional Chinese upturned eaves and Western-style curved windows and doors, its blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles made it an iconic building in Chongqing back then.

In 1937, when the War of Resistance Against Japan broke out, the Nationalist Government relocated its capital to Chongqing and requisitioned this classic Chinese-style building for offices used by the [Redacted] and other departments. During the Chongqing Bombing Campaign, the civilian government agencies were moved to the countryside, and the Garrison Command moved into the Yilin Hospital building. After the victory of the war, the building was returned to the hospital. Not long after the liberation, the hospital became a public institution and has remained so to this day.
