Monument to Martyr Zhang Peilue

The Monument to Martyr Zhang Peilue is a cultural relic protection unit of Chongqing and a classic red tourism site.

Zhang Peilue, styled Liewu and also known as Zhihan, was born in 1876 (the second year of the Guangxu reign in the Qing Dynasty) in Ronglongchang, Rongchang County. In his childhood, he attended a private school and passed the imperial examination as a Xiucai (successful candidate) at the age of 23. In 1906, he joined the Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance) and later became one of the leaders of the anti-Qing independence movement in Sichuan, a modern democratic revolutionary martyr.

Before the Xinhai Revolution, Zhang Peilue served as the supervisor of Chongqing Prefectural Middle School—the first school established by the Chinese in Chongqing. Prior to the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty, he was involved in military logistics, transportation, and liaison work for the volunteer army. After the establishment of the Sichuan Military Government, Zhang Peilue served as its Governor. On April 25, 1912, at the invitation of the Sichuan Military Government, he went to Chengdu to "jointly plan new governance" and assumed the post of Vice Governor of the Sichuan Military Government. Soon after, he was summoned to Beijing by Yuan Shikai and placed under house arrest, where he was killed that same year at the age of 36.

On March 29, 1943, the foundation-laying ceremony for the Monument to Martyrs Zou Rong and Zhang Peilue was held in the Grand Auditorium of the Chongqing National Government.

The inscription “Monument to Martyr Zhang Peilue” was written by Dan Maoxin.
