Monument to Martyr Zou Rong

The Monument to Martyr Zou Rong is a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit and a classic red tourism attraction in Chongqing.

The Monument to Martyr Zou Rong is located in the South District Park of Yuzhong District, Chongqing. This monument was established by the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Kuomintang in accordance with the decision made at the Eighth Meeting of the Fifth Central Executive Committee of the Kuomintang held in 1941.

The monument was built by Han Hongshun Construction Company, starting construction on January 26, 1946, and completed on June 29 of the same year. It is an octagonal tower-style structure, with the stone monument standing 5.5 meters tall in total, and the main body reaching 3.52 meters in height. The east, south, west, and north sides of the monument are all inscribed with the seven golden characters “Monument to Martyr Zou Rong” in clerical script, while all eight sides are engraved with inscriptions. The text is based on a slightly modified version of "Eulogy for the Tomb of General Zou" written by Zhang Taiyan in the 11th year of the Republic of China (1922) for the establishment of Zou Rong’s tomb in Shanghai, mainly recounting the life of the martyr. The inscription is in clerical script, signed: “Respectfully erected by Zhang Dulun, Mayor of Chongqing. Year 35 of the Republic of China.” After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Monument to Martyr Zou Rong was damaged several times. In 1982, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution, the Chongqing Municipal People's Congress decided to renovate the monument, and the “Monument to Martyr Zou Rong” regained its former glory.

On December 1, 1983, the Chongqing Municipal People's Government designated the “Monument to Martyr Zou Rong” as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit. On April 16, 1991, the Sichuan Provincial People's Government listed the “Monument to Martyr Zou Rong” as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit, and on September 7, 2000, the Chongqing Municipal People's Government announced it as one of the first municipal-level cultural relic protection units after the city’s direct governance status.
