Former Site of Liuzhou Airport

The former site of Liuzhou Airport is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former site of Liuzhou Airport is located in the Old Airport Development Zone of Liunan District. It was built in 1929. In April 1934, it became the main training base for the Air Force School of the Fourth Group Army of the Nationalist Government, making it the largest dual-use military and civilian airport in Guangxi. The following year, it served as the campus for the Guangxi Aviation School, and in 1937, it was taken over by the Central Aviation Committee of the Nationalist Government. In the winter of 1939, the Soviet Volunteer Group stationed at the airport. In 1943, it became one of the key bases of the United States 14th Air Force ("Flying Tigers"). In November 1944, the airport was occupied by Japanese forces, who withdrew in June of the following year, leaving the airport damaged. Civil aviation resumed in September 1946, and the airport also served as a military transport airfield for the U.S. Air Force. In December 1949, it was taken over by the People's Liberation Army of China and used as a military airfield. It ceased operation in 1999. In 1996, it was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Liuzhou City.
