Having been confined in the city’s "concrete grids" for too long, living under the glow of neon and fluorescent lights every day, people seem to have become hollow shells, increasingly yearning to bask freely in nature’s sunshine, rain, and dew. In fact, you only need to take a short trip to a place less than 7 kilometers from the city center—Xinxu Village in Taiyang Town—to listen to the murmuring stream, bathe in sunlight, moonlight, and starlight, and even savor delicious farm-style cuisine. As you enter Xinxu Village, you can hear the murmuring stream in the distance, greeted by the village’s spillway dam. In the past, this was just a small river that flowed through Shuimotun and Xinxutun in Xinxu Village into the Liu River. The river had abundant water and flowed year-round. In 1960, the then Xinxu Timber Storage Yard began constructing a power station, building a dam downstream of the Xinxu Iron Bridge to divert water to Shuimotun for electricity generation. The dam was completed in 1961.

The completed dam has a crest length of about 50 meters, an overall height of about 20 meters, a water depth of over 10 meters, and a water storage area of nearly 20,000 square meters. The dam is divided into three levels: the first level is the main dam. The second level is a protective embankment, about 2 meters high, with a drop of about 7 meters between the main dam and the embankment. The third level is a secondary dam, which is curved and about 10 meters high. Between the embankment and the secondary dam lies a small pool about 800 square meters in area, with a water depth of about 2 meters.

Since there is no spillway at any level, when the water is full, it overflows from the entire dam surface, forming a three-tiered cascading waterfall landscape. Hence, the Xinxu Dam is also called the Xinxu Waterfall by local villagers.

Xinxu Leisure Farm

The water source of the Xinxu Waterfall comes from two origins: one is the abundant groundwater from several villages within the jurisdiction of Taiyang Town, originating in areas around Sihe and Tongcun; the other is the Longhuai Reservoir in Liuzhou County. Thanks to the constant flow, the water inside the dam is crystal clear, allowing the waterfall to be visible all year round.

During the rainy season, when the river is full, the main dam waterfall resembles a herd of galloping wild horses, roaring thunderously as it plunges down, with white waves splashing and an imposing momentum. In the dry season, the waterfall looks like a pristine, spotless ribbon, gently descending along the dam surface, converging into the small pool on the secondary dam, with shimmering blue waves and crystal-clear water. Occasionally, water vapor evaporated by the sun creates a misty atmosphere, as if you were in a fairyland. Every spring and summer, wild lotus roots and leaves float on the water surface, while a small bamboo raft gently drifts by.

Continuing along the road, you’ll pass more than 10 farmhouse restaurants, which have become one of the ways villagers increase their income. The villagers are adept at leveraging natural advantages, building these restaurants in uniquely scenic spots—whether beside bamboo forests, rivers, or mountain springs. When travelers are tired, they can dine on farmhouse food, admire the beautiful views, and enjoy leisure time at these cozy eateries.

Going further along the Liujiang Riverbank, lush green bamboos grow along the shore, and terraced orchards planted against the hills come into view. Stepping into one of the loquat orchards, you’ll find the trees already heavy with fruit. A villager tending the loquats cheerfully says that in just over 10 days, the loquats will be ripe, and visitors can pick them in the orchard themselves to enjoy the fun of farm life.

Taiyang Town: Located in the western suburbs of Liuzhou City, Guangxi, Taiyang Town in Liunan District is known as the “Western Gateway” of Liuzhou. The town covers an area of 112 square kilometers and governs 13 administrative villages—Taiyangcun, Xinxu, Baile, Shanwan, Tongcun, Shangdeng, Sihe, Heping, Laofang, X’e, Shantou, Wenbi, and Changlong—as well as one neighborhood committee, 75 natural villages, and 157 villager groups. The area is home to ethnic groups including Zhuang, Han, Miao, and Yao, with a total population of nearly 60,000, of which 24,000 are permanent residents.
