The Shantou Tropic of Cancer Monument is a cultural heritage site protected by the Shantou Municipal Government.

Located 5 kilometers north of Shantou University, the Tropic of Cancer Monument is built on the mountainside of Jilong Mountain, standing 13.6 meters tall with a base width of 30 meters. It features an “北” (North) shaped support holding up a globe with a diameter of 5 meters. On the summer solstice each year, when the sun shines directly on the Tropic of Cancer, sunlight can be seen passing through a small hole in the center of the globe and casting a circular shadow on the ground, which disappears after just a few minutes. From then on, the sun gradually moves southward. This makes the invisible Tropic of Cancer visible on the ground. You can stand with one foot on the Tropic of Cancer and one foot off—literally with one foot in the temperate zone and one in the subtropical zone. Nearby, there are also rest areas such as Kuafu Pavilion. Standing at the mountaintop, you can look west to Niutianyang and east down onto the conical volcanic landform of Jilong Mountain. Transportation: Drive 5 kilometers northwest from Shantou University along National Highway 206 to reach the monument, passing by Longquan Rock on the way.
