The one-kilometer stretch from Shantou’s Xidi Wharf to the intersection at Wa Ma Road is lined mostly with early 20th-century buildings, characterized by a one-meter inward setback along the roadside to form covered walkways known as “qilou” for shelter from rain; the areas near windows and doors feature decorative patterns. Radiating from Little Park, the “Si Yong Yi Sheng Ping” streets are mostly lined with shops offering quality goods at affordable prices. There are also famous snacks such as West Tianxiang Oyster Omelette and Laoma Palace Zongzi.

Shantou’s old neighborhoods are an iconic architectural complex in the city and a must-visit destination for overseas Chinese seeking their roots.

Most of the buildings are Western-style qilou, featuring a large collection of structures built in the early 20th century, predominantly in architectural styles such as faux Romanesque, faux Gothic, and Baroque.

The rain-sheltering “qilou,” densely packed historic shops, and slightly chaotic streets all reveal the unique historical charm of Shantou Old Town.

This area was once the most bustling commercial center of Shantou. Strolling through it, you’ll find historical buildings such as the Shantou General Post Office and Laoma Palace still retaining their original appearance.
