Chengjing Charitable Society

Chengjing Charitable Society is located in Xigang Neighborhood Committee, Guanghua Subdistrict, Jinping District, Shantou City, Guangdong Province. Established in 1919, it faces southwest from a northeast orientation, with a total width of 19 meters and a depth of 12.6 meters, covering an area of approximately 1,029 square meters and a built-up area of 239.4 square meters. It follows a two-courtyard, one-sky-well, one-worship-pavilion layout, built with earth and wood structures. The exterior features a flush-gable roof with red and green glazed tiles. There are two coiled-dragon stone pillars each in front of the Heavenly King Pavilion and the main hall. The main structure is surrounded by granite railings. Inside, the building uses a post-and-lintel construction method, with beams and frames fully painted in palace-style designs. The floor is paved with granite slabs. Two stone lanterns and one bronze Heavenly King Incense Burner are placed in front of the main hall, which enshrines the statue of the “Dark Heavenly Emperor.” This society was among the first five major charitable halls and societies established after the founding of Shantou Port, originally located southwest of the Red Brick Building on Minzu Road. Upholding the principles of supporting the nation and helping the people, aiding the orphaned and poor, relieving suffering and healing the injured, providing medical aid and burial assistance, promoting education and nurturing talent, and practicing all forms of kindness, the society had all its buildings, halls, land, and assets taken over during the Cultural Revolution. In 1996, after applying for approval, a Ming- and Qing-style palatial building was constructed next to Guanghua Bridge, where the Chengjing Charitable Society Welfare Association was established to resume various charitable activities. This building holds certain reference value for studying the history of Shantou Port and ancient architecture.
