The Shantou Academy of Agricultural Sciences is located on the western side of downtown Shantou, covering an area of approximately 160,000 square meters. It has established eighteen functional areas: the Science and Technology Talents Sculpture Corridor, Science Popularization Gallery, Traditional Chaozhou-Shantou Farming Tools Exhibition Corridor, Plant Tissue Culture Production Line, Exotic Flower and Rare Plant Garden, Tropical Botanical Garden, Shade-Loving Plant Garden, Breeding Garden, Bird Paradise, Palm Garden, Herb Garden, Marine Shell Museum, Butterfly Specimen Museum, Chinese Betta Fish Museum, Phalaenopsis Standardized Demonstration Area, and Aquatic Plant Zone. The site also features supporting facilities such as a multimedia classroom, student plant tissue culture laboratory, student labor practice base, sports playground, children’s playground, barbecue area, fishing zone, and Gongfu tea house.

The Shantou Agricultural Science Park has now become one of the first “National Industrial and Agricultural Tourism Demonstration Sites,” a “Guangdong Province Science Popularization Education Base,” and a “Guangdong Province Youth Science and Technology Education Base.” Seventeen functional areas of the science park have been completed and opened to the public: the Entrance Scenic Area, Research Garden, Science and Technology Talents Sculpture Corridor, Genetic Breeding Garden, Exotic Flower and Rare Plant Garden, Orchid Garden, Phalaenopsis Garden, Shade-Loving Plant Garden, Cactus Garden, Famous Fruits Garden of Chaozhou-Shantou, Aquatic Plant Pond, Bird Paradise, Silkworm and Butterfly Museum, Ornamental Fish Pond, Chaozhou-Shantou Farming Garden, Sports Playground, and Labor Practice Garden. Visitors can tour the plant tissue culture production line, floral horticulture, grain and oil breeding, and aerospace high-tech agricultural exhibition gardens. Strolling through the Orchid Garden, you can admire the resilience and elegance of orchid leaves, the purity and beauty of the flowers, and the delicate fragrance, experiencing the endless charm of Chinese orchids and the profound cultural essence of orchid appreciation in China. Wandering in the Exotic Orchid Garden, you’ll find vibrant and spectacular blooms of Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Oncidium, Dendrobium, and more, a feast for the eyes. Meandering through the Exotic Flower and Rare Plant Garden and the Cactus Garden, the lush green leaves, bright flowers, and colorful, uniquely shaped fruits bring a sense of joy and relaxation. In these crop-themed areas, you can explore various forms of facility agriculture such as glass greenhouses, plastic film greenhouses, and shaded hoop houses, and learn about modern agricultural practices that differ from traditional methods—such as substrate cultivation, hydroponics, drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, and vertical farming. The Bird Paradise is home to nearly a hundred species and close to a thousand rare birds. When you enter the aviary with a cup of feed, the birds will flock to you as if children were welcoming their grandfather returning from a trip. The Silkworm and Butterfly Garden displays numerous silkworm and butterfly specimens, and also includes a butterfly and silkworm breeding area where visitors can purchase butterfly specimens and live silkworms. Children are delighted when they buy their favorite butterfly bookmarks or a box of silkworm babies—their joy surpasses even that of fluttering butterflies. In the Ornamental Fish Pond, schools of koi and goldfish swim leisurely, and when they sense visitors approaching, they swim eagerly toward you, competing playfully for the food you offer. Here, you can deeply experience the harmony between humans and nature.
