Shantou University is designated as a patriotic education base.

Shantou University is a comprehensive provincial university in Guangdong that was established in 1981 with the approval of the State Council as part of the national “211 Project.” It is jointly built by the Ministry of Education, the Guangdong Provincial Government, and the Li Ka Shing Foundation, and is the world’s only public university that receives continuous funding from a private foundation—the Li Ka Shing Foundation. The university is situated in the northwest area of Shantou, a coastal city, covering a land area of 1,920.18 mu and a building area of 448,400 square meters.

Shantou University has received strong support from the renowned patriotic entrepreneur and international business leader Mr. Li Ka-shing. The Li Ka Shing Foundation has pledged donations totaling 6 billion Hong Kong dollars to Shantou University (including the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business).

The university has one national key discipline, offers “Cheung Kong Scholars” Distinguished Professor positions, operates three postdoctoral research stations, and has one first-level discipline authorized to grant doctoral degrees, ten first-level disciplines authorized to grant master's degrees. Including disciplines covered by these first-level points, the university has a total of 25 second-level disciplines authorized to grant doctoral degrees and 84 second-level disciplines authorized to grant master's degrees. It comprises the College of Liberal Arts, College of Science, College of Engineering, Medical College, College of Law, Business School, Cheung Kong School of Art and Design, Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication, Graduate School, and Continuing Education College, enrolling doctoral, master's, and undergraduate students nationwide (including Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan).

The university has established a number of research institutions capable of conducting both basic scientific research and directly serving local economic development. These mainly include the State Key Laboratory of Manufacturing Systems Technology (Ministry of Education), a branch of the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Oncology, the Key Laboratory of Marine Biotechnology, the Key Laboratory of Digital Signal and Image Processing Technology, the Key Laboratory of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Immunopathology, the Key Laboratory of Structures and Wind Tunnels, the Institute of Local Government Development, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao-Taiwan Enterprise Cooperation Research Institute. The library is fully computerized and is committed to building a modern digital library. The Medical College has five affiliated hospitals.

With the support of the Li Ka Shing Foundation, the university actively expands academic exchanges and cooperation. Nobel laureates Yang Zhenning, Tsung-Dao Lee, Samuel C.C. Ting, James Mirrlees, Mo Yan, as well as world-class masters and scholars such as Shing-Tung Yau and Pang Yiu-Kwong, have been appointed as honorary, visiting, or adjunct professors at the university. They have delivered lectures on campus, broadening students' academic horizons. The university has established close academic exchange and cooperation relationships with nearly 20 universities in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Russia, Australia, and Germany, and has formulated and implemented student exchange programs for both undergraduates and graduates.

Centered around the educational goal of cultivating individuals who are “aspirational, knowledgeable, perseverant, and accomplished,” the university adheres to a student-centered approach, reforming its management system and innovating its talent cultivation model. The newly planned Medical College will offer some of the world’s most cutting-edge life science and technology courses. Starting in 2001, with the support of the Li Ka Shing Foundation, Shantou University launched a comprehensive reform initiative oriented toward internationalization. Foreign professionals were appointed to key administrative roles such as Executive Vice-Chancellor, Vice-Chancellors, and Deans. The university conducted exemplary and comprehensive educational reforms in curriculum, teaching, resource management, and personnel systems. Many of these reform experiences have been recognized, supported, and promoted by the state, and were highly praised by a comrade as “an experimental field for higher education reform in China.” In 2012, the Ministry of Education, the Guangdong Provincial Government, and the Li Ka Shing Foundation decided to jointly build Shantou University, supporting its continued reforms to become a high-level university that is advanced domestically and renowned internationally. On September 29, 2013, Beijing time, the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and Shantou University signed a memorandum of understanding in Tel Aviv, Israel, to jointly establish the Guangdong Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) in Shantou, Guangdong Province.
