Niutianyang

Niutianyang is located in the western suburbs of Shantou and was referred to as a second hometown by Li Zhaoxing. It is now a military base under the Guangzhou Military Region. Once a tidal flat submerged at high tide and exposed at low tide, it spans an area of ten thousand mu. In the early 1960s, the People's Liberation Army responded to Chairman Mao Zedong’s call and moved into Niutianyang to reclaim land from the sea. Over the past forty years, this land has witnessed dramatic changes — it once achieved the miracle of planting crops the same year the land was reclaimed, yielding 1,190 jin of grain per mu; it also suffered the tragic loss of 553 young soldiers and students who died defending the seawall during a powerful typhoon; and more recently, it has seen the modern transformation of converting farmland back to fishponds, where over 20,000 mu of ponds now teem with shrimp and crabs.
