Former Site of the Southern Expedition Headquarters of the August 1 Nanchang Uprising Forces

The former site of the Southern Expedition Headquarters of the August 1 Nanchang Uprising Forces is a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit, a classic red tourism attraction, and a patriotic education base.

The former site of the headquarters of the Nanchang Uprising southern expedition forces is located at No. 50 Minquan Road, Jinping District, Shantou City. Built in 1926, it was originally the Dabu Guild Hall. The three-story reinforced concrete building faces east, with each floor covering an area of 423.7㎡ and a total area of 1,271㎡. Each floor is connected by corridors on all four sides.

After the Nanchang Uprising on August 1, 1927, the main force, led by comrades such as Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, He Long, and Ye Ting, advanced toward Guangdong. On September 23, they marched from Sanhe Dam into Chaozhou City; on the 24th, they liberated Shantou City and established the Southern Expedition Headquarters of the Nanchang Uprising forces here. The Nanchang Uprising troops were in Chaoshan for a total of seven days before and after entering the region, which is referred to in the revolutionary history of Chaoshan as the “Seven Days of Red in Chaoshan.” Its impact was profound, laying the foundation for the Chaoshan Communist Party organization to lead armed struggle and establish revolutionary bases. This is a revolutionary site related to a major historical event and important figures. The site was designated as a municipal cultural relics protection unit by the Shantou Municipal People's Government in November 1988, and was recognized as a Shantou Patriotic Education Base in 1995. In May 2008, with the approval of the Municipal Compiling Committee, the “Shantou August 1 Nanchang Uprising Memorial Hall” was established and operated jointly with the “Shantou Dongzheng Army Revolutionary Historical Relics Exhibition Hall.” In May 2010, it was designated as a provincial-level cultural relics protection unit by the Guangdong Provincial People's Government. The site underwent comprehensive renovation in 2012 and the restoration work has now been completed.

Although the site has withstood the test of time, it still stands majestically, holding significant historical and research value. Although the “August 1” Nanchang Uprising forces only stayed in Shantou for seven days, their presence had a tremendous impact on the city’s history. To commemorate their time and honor these soldiers, the people referred to those seven days as the renowned “Seven Days of Red in Chaoshan” in the history of China’s revolution. At that time, the “August 1” Uprising forces, representing the revolutionary armed forces led by the Chinese Communist Party, were a symbol of revolutionary armed offense. They sowed more revolutionary seeds throughout Chaoshan, creating important conditions for launching armed struggles in areas such as the Da’nan Mountains, Sangpu Mountains, and Haifeng-Lufeng, while also inspiring the people of Chaoshan to resolutely carry the revolution through to the end.

The building was originally the “Dabu Guild Hall,” with the name personally inscribed by Zou Lu, then-president of Sun Yat-sen University. It is the only remaining Dabu Guild Hall in Shantou and even across the country, holding significant research value.

In 2010, it was designated as part of the Sixth Batch of Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units by the Guangdong Provincial People's Government.
