The former site of the Japanese Consulate in Shantou is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Guangdong Province.

Former Site of the Japanese Consulate:

Located at No. 11 Dahua Road, Jinping District, Shantou City, the former site of the Japanese Consulate is currently managed and used by the city’s Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. This building, constructed in 1904 (the 30th year of the Guangxu reign in the Qing Dynasty), was rebuilt once in the 1920s. It covers a total area of 2,500 square meters, including the main and auxiliary buildings as well as the front and rear gardens. It is a typical example of Japanese-Western architecture, well-preserved, with its architectural style and structure largely maintaining their original appearance. In response to safety hazards caused by years of disrepair, the city’s Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has also invested funds in renovation and maintenance, contributing to the protection of the building.

Currently, the former site of the Japanese Consulate has been listed as one of the sixth batch of cultural heritage sites protected at the municipal level in Shantou. On this basis, the city’s Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau is further actively preparing and supplementing application materials for provincial-level cultural heritage protection, aiming to have the site listed as part of the ninth batch of cultural heritage sites protected at the provincial level in Guangdong Province.
