Shantou Guiyuan

Shantou Guiyuan is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

Located on Gongyuan Road in Jinping District, Shantou, Guiyuan is a historic building that witnessed the turbulent years of China’s revolutionary history. Many notable historical figures once worked and lived here.

According to the *Shantou Annals*: In the 14th year of the Republic of China (1925), after the National Revolutionary Army’s Eastern Expeditionary Force entered Shantou, Chiang Kai-shek, the commander-in-chief of the Eastern Expeditionary Force, stayed in this building. Xu Chongzhi, commander of the Right Route Army, Liao Zhongkai, the KMT Party representative of the Whampoa Military Academy, and Russian advisor Galen arrived at Guiyuan to discuss major military strategies for suppressing Yang Ximin and Liu Zhenhuan with Chiang Kai-shek. This site has since become an important historical relic witnessing the Eastern Expedition of the National Revolutionary Army.

Guiyuan will serve as an important venue for citizens and tourists to learn about China’s revolutionary history and to engage in patriotic education. Its cultural, historical, architectural, artistic, and research values will be fully realized.

In 2015, it was designated as a Cultural Relic Protection Unit of Guangdong Province by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province.
