Introduction

Winds Through Myriad Valleys and Pines is located north of Songhe Studio in the Mountain Resort. Constructed in the 47th year of the Kangxi reign during the Qing Dynasty (1708), it is the earliest group of structures in the palace area. Comprising buildings such as the Hall of Winds Through Myriad Valleys and Pines, Jian Shi Studio, Jing Jia Chamber, Yi He Study, and Peng Lang Xian Ying, it is perched on a ridge with the lake behind, featuring a flexible layout and embodying characteristics of southern-style gardens. The surrounding area has many ancient pines, hence the name. This complex of buildings was where Emperor Kangxi reviewed memorials, received officials, and enjoyed views of the lake and mountains. It is the sixth of the “Thirty-Six Views of Kangxi.” The Hall of Winds Through Myriad Valleys and Pines is the main hall, boasting spectacular scenery. As a child, Emperor Qianlong often listened to his grandfather’s teachings here. After ascending the throne, he renamed it the Hall of Gratitude and composed the “Imperial Inscription on the Hall of Gratitude in the Mountain Resort” in memory of his predecessor. Behind the hall lies Jian Shi Studio, where Emperor Qianlong studied during his childhood at the resort.
