On the east side of the pavilion stands a stele pavilion housing the “Wénjīn Pavilion Stele Record.” The structure appears two-storied from the outside but has three levels inside, built with brick and wood. A plaque inscribed with the characters “Wénjīn Pavilion,” handwritten by Emperor Qianlong, hangs above the entrance. In front of the pavilion lies a pool of clear water, reflecting the rockery and the pavilion’s image. On the eastern part of the rockery is a moon-viewing terrace, while on the western side stands a charming pavilion. The layout is meticulous and the surroundings serene. This pavilion, together with the Wényuán Pavilion in the Forbidden City in Beijing, the Wényuán Pavilion in the Old Summer Palace, and the Wènsù Pavilion in the Mukden Palace in Shenyang, are collectively known as the Four Northern Pavilions—imperial libraries. Originally, the Wénjīn Pavilion housed one complete set each of the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries and the Imperial Collection of Four. After the Xinhai Revolution, the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries was transferred to the Beijing Library, while the Imperial Collection of Four had been looted and sold off by warlords long before. Wénjīn Pavilion is located in the western part of the plains area in the Chengde Mountain Resort. It was built in the 39th year of the Qianlong reign (1774) and modeled after the Tianyige Library of the Fan family in Ningbo, Zhejiang.
