Introduction Cloud Mountain Paradise is located behind the Yanbo Zhishuang Hall in the Chengde Mountain Resort. It was built in the 49th year of the Kangxi reign during the Qing Dynasty (1710) and is the eighth scene of the “Thirty-Six Scenes of Kangxi.” The building has two stories, is five bays wide, and one bay deep. Instead of stairs, it uses rockeries as natural steps. Perched on a ridge with the lake behind it, the structure commands a high vantage point. With its sweeping views of surrounding peaks and the ever-changing hues of evening mist and morning fog, it is truly beyond description—hence its name. The western room on the upper floor was originally a Buddhist shrine known as the Lotus Chamber, housing a bluish jade statue of Guanyin. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, imperial concubines would come here to worship the moon and pray for blessings. Exiting north through the Xiuyun Gate leads directly to the lake area.
