Zhuhai Lantern Sand Water Town. Lantern Sand is located in the western part of Zhuhai City. For generations, the local people have made a living by fishing at sea, known as the "water folks" or fishermen, also referred to as the "Tanka people." These water-dwelling Tanka people live along the water’s edge, and the unique architectural culture of the water town is formed by the riverside features on both sides of the river. The pristine natural characteristics of Lantern Sand are quite obvious.

Most residents of Lantern Sand come from Xinhui, Panyu, and Zhongshan in Guangdong. The lifestyle and customs of these water-dwelling people are unique. Singing Shui Ge (water songs) and holding water weddings are traditional cultural practices passed down through generations in Lantern Sand. During traditional festivals, the locals set up singing stages under kapok trees, place two tables, and take turns singing Shui Ge in friendly competitions.

The Tanka ancestors’ mysterious and grand water weddings have become even more intriguing after centuries of change and integration over generations, forming the unique folk customs of the Doumen water town in Zhuhai. The Doumen water wedding customs originated in the early Qing Dynasty, matured during the Tongzhi and Guangxu periods of the Qing Dynasty, and stem from the Tanka people’s tradition of singing to celebrate marriage. It blends elements of Cantonese and Hakka cultures, using boats as transportation and songs to run through the entire wedding process across 13 rituals including preparing the wedding banquet, welcoming the bride, paying respects to the elders, and meeting fellow singers.
