Ancient Well at Lotus Mountain

The Ancient Well at Lotus Mountain is a cultural relic protection unit of Doumen District.

The Ancient Well at Lotus Mountain is located at the southern foot of Lotus Mountain in Qianxi Village, Qianwu Town, Doumen District, Zhuhai City. It was built during the late Song and early Yuan dynasties when Qianwu Village was first established and later expanded. It was renovated in the Xinyou year (1831) of the Daoguang reign in the Qing Dynasty. The well is 5 meters deep with a diameter of 1.36 meters. During the renovation, blue bricks were used to line the upper part of the well to protect its walls, and four granite slabs were used to reshape the circular well opening into a square one. According to historical records: during the renovation, a granite slab measuring 1.15 meters in length and 0.45 meters in width was placed beside the well platform, with the inscription “Spring of Xinyou Year, Daoguang Reign, Erected by the Whole Community” engraved in intaglio. This slab has since been lost. The Ancient Well at Lotus Mountain is one of the oldest wells discovered in Doumen District. It is currently well-preserved, with an intact and stable structure, having suffered little major damage over time. The water remains clear and abundant throughout the year, and it is still in use by local villagers. The well holds certain historical value for the study of the settlement, production, and daily life of early residents in the Doumen area during the late Song and early Yuan periods. In July 2011, it was officially designated and announced as a cultural relic protection unit of Doumen District.
