Panjiakou Reservoir

Panjiakou Reservoir is a national AA-level tourist attraction and a national water conservancy scenic area.

On December 17, 1982, after more than seven years of intensive construction, the main structure of the Panjiakou Reservoir — the largest water conservancy and hydropower project in North China, capable of storing 2.93 billion cubic meters of water and generating 450,000 kilowatts of electricity — was largely completed.

Located at the junction of the Tangshan and Chengde regions, the Panjiakou Reservoir is a key project for developing the water resources of the Luan River. It serves multiple purposes: on average, it can regulate 1.95 billion cubic meters of water annually to be delivered to Tianjin and Tangshan, meeting the industrial, agricultural, and urban water needs of both cities, while also reducing the water supply pressure on the Miyun Reservoir. Moreover, it effectively controls flood disasters and ensures the safety of the Luanhe Railway Bridge on the Beijing-Shanhaiguan Railway downstream. At the same time, the reservoir area supports the development of shipping, aquaculture, tourism, and other industries.

Panjiakou Reservoir

Located in the western part of Kuancheng Manchu Autonomous County

at the junction of the jurisdictions of Luotai, Tashan, and Dushigou townships. This reservoir was approved by the State Council as one of the key projects for the “Luanhe-Tianjin Diversion.” As the main component of the diversion project, the Panjiakou Reservoir is one of the major reservoirs in North China. It consists of a main dam and two auxiliary dams, covering a maximum area of 72 square kilometers, with a maximum depth of 80 meters. The total capacity of the reservoir is 2.93 billion cubic meters, and the water surface area spans 105,000 mu. The surrounding mountains on both sides of the reservoir are steep and rugged, dotted with grotesque rocks, creating a dramatic landscape. The area where the reservoir is located, around Xifengkou, is home to ancient sections of the Great Wall and strategic mountain passes. As parts of the Great Wall have been submerged underwater, a unique spectacle has formed — the Underwater Great Wall.
