Tang Sanying Longevity Temple
Tang Sanying Longevity Temple is located in Tang Sanying Village, Longhua County. As early as the 20th year of the Kangxi reign (1681), when the Mulan Hunting Grounds were first established, Eight Banners troops were stationed here. In the 45th year of the Kangxi reign (1706), a superintendent of the Mulan Hunting Grounds was appointed—one official of the fourth rank and eight junior officials (zhangjing) of the sixth rank. The superintendent’s office was also located here.
The current “Longevity Temple” was rebuilt in the 1990s. According to the Veritable Records of Emperor Shengzu of Qing (Volume 5), in August of the 42nd year of the Kangxi reign (1703), Emperor Kangxi (Xuan Ye) left the frontier, stayed for four days in Poluohe Tun and then in Polegashan (present-day Tang Sanying), before entering the hunting grounds at Han Temuer Dabahan (present-day Camel Ridge in Sidao Gully). After the 43rd year of the Kangxi reign, he no longer stayed in this area. The Longevity Temple faces south, with two large flagpoles on either side of the mountain gate. Inside the gate are an incense pavilion and incense pool, flanked by bell and drum towers, with the Heavenly King Hall in the center, followed by the rear hall, side rooms, and a front terrace in front of the hall. Outside the west wall of the temple, across the street, there is a theater stage, and 50 meters south of the temple stands another theater stage with the same architectural layout, though the southern one appears more magnificent. The temple complex covers an area of 320,000 square meters, but during the Cultural Revolution, the “Smash the Four Olds” campaign led to the demolition of its structures.
