Wenyuan Lion Grove Garden

Wenyuan Lion Grove Garden is a major attraction in the Chengde Mountain Resort, situated on a cluster of small islands amid the undulating waters of Yinhu Lake, east of Shuixin Pavilion. Built in the 31st year of the Qianlong reign (1767), it was modeled after the Lion Grove Garden in Suzhou. The garden features rugged rockeries and exquisitely delicate architecture, embodying the artistic conception of both the Lion Grove painting by the celebrated Yuan Dynasty artist Ni Yunlin and the essence of Jiangnan-style private gardens—where grandeur is captured within a limited space.

Wenyuan Lion Grove Garden was destroyed during the Japanese occupation of Rehe, leaving only its foundations. In 1992, to promote traditional Chinese culture and restore the former glory of the resort, the citizens of Chengde spontaneously launched the “Love Our China, Restore Our Wenyuan” campaign. Donations poured in from provincial and municipal leaders, as well as students from elementary to high school. Today, the garden has been reopened to the public.

Covering an area of over 7,000 square meters, every scene in Wenyuan Lion Grove Garden showcases the elegance of Jiangnan. The garden’s sixteen scenic spots include: Lion Grove, Rainbow Bridge, Rockery, Nijing Hall, Qingxin Pavilion, Vine Lattice, Stone Steps, Zhantai Pavilion, Qingshu Studio, Xiaoxiang Pergola, Tanzhen Study, Yanjing Tower, Painted Boat, Yunlin Grottoes, Hengbi Veranda, and Water Gate.

Located in Chengde, Wenyuan Lion Grove Garden is also close to many local delicacies once enjoyed by emperors, such as Gaidao (sliced and seasoned meat) and Nansha Cake. Gaidao is a famous imperial dish passed down from imperial chefs, emphasizing exquisite knife skills. It is shaped like a tower and boasts a delicious flavor. Nansha Cake, another sweet treat from the same culinary lineage, has a unique taste that appeals to all ages.
