Former Residence of Guo Xiaochuan

The former residence of Guo Xiaochuan is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Guo Xiaochuan is located in a small alleyway leading south from Shiqiao East in Fengshan Town, Fengning Manchu Autonomous County. The residence is a traditional quadrangle courtyard facing south, with a blue-brick gatehouse; upon entering, there is a screen wall; the main house has three bays in width and one bay in depth; there are two wing rooms on each side of the courtyard. The residence covers an area of 273.06 square meters. It is the birthplace of Guo Xiaochuan and was his home until 1933 when he moved to Beijing with his father. On February 7, 2001, it was approved by the People's Government of Hebei Province as a Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit of Hebei Province.

Guo Xiaochuan’s wife, Ms. Du Hui, and their children donated a large number of his personal belongings to the residence, including manuscripts, photographs, and personal items. The establishment of the Guo Xiaochuan Former Residence has become a window for Fengning County to promote the region, allowing local residents, primary and secondary school students, as well as tourists visiting Fengning, to receive a dose of patriotic education in the shortest time possible. By reviewing the life experiences of Guo Xiaochuan, the site comprehensively reflects the red history of Fengning. It inspires people to cherish the hard-won peace of today and to strive and work harder.

Guo Xiaochuan (1920–1976)

Pen name: Ma Tieding. A native of Fengning, Hebei. Member of the Communist Party of China. In 1937, he joined the Eighth Route Army and engaged in political work. In 1941, he studied at the Literary Theory Research Office of the Marx-Lenin Institute in Yan’an. He served successively as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Masses Daily, the organ newspaper of the Jizhao Re-Liao Sub-bureau; Editorial Board Member of the Tianjin Daily; Deputy Section Chief and then Section Chief of the Propaganda Department of the Central-South Bureau; Deputy Director and then Section Chief of the Theoretical Propaganda Department of the Central Propaganda Department; Council Member, Deputy Secretary, and Secretary-General of the China Writers Association; and Special Correspondent for the People’s Daily.
