Zhangsanying Dizang Temple

Zhangsanying Dizang Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Dizang Temple is located to the west of Zhangsanying Town in Longhua County, Hebei Province. The temple was first built in 1816, the 21st year of the Jiaqing reign during the Qing Dynasty, and the year of Bingzi in the lunar calendar. In its heyday, the temple boasted a grand and majestic layout, with temple properties including over 300 acres of land donated as incense offerings, extending its influence to Weichang, Fengning, and the surrounding areas of Zhangsanying Town. It also operated services such as stagecoach inns and local medicine shops.

Dizang Temple has been passed down through four generations of monks. Its founding eminent monk, “Puxiu,” originated from Dizang Temple at Beijing’s Badachu area. He was highly accomplished in Buddhist practice and morals, and his reputation spread across major temples inside and outside the Pass. He had three dharma disciples, with the monastic names Tongda, Tonghe, and Tongyuan. Tongda became the abbot of Dizang Temple, Tonghe became the abbot of Lianfeng Temple, and Tongyuan became the abbot of Wanshou Temple. Tongda passed on his teachings to his disciple Xinfu, who then passed them to “Ranci,” also known as Yang Rui from Group 7 of Xijie Village. Initially, twenty temple halls were constructed, excluding the Guan Yu Temple on the western side.

During the ten years of turmoil, five out of ten halls were destroyed. In 1965, two ancient trees that had stood for over 200 years were sadly cut down. Early restoration efforts began in 1995, and the site applied to be designated as a county-level key cultural relics protection unit. Approval was granted by the Bureau of Culture, the County Government, the County People’s Congress, the Zhangsanying Town Government, and the Cultural Station. The temple was initially consecrated in early 1999. It now covers an area of 1,610 square meters and hosts an annual traditional temple fair on the 18th day of the fourth lunar month, which has a wide-reaching influence.
