Weichang Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is located in the northwest of the Yudaokou Scenic Area Reception Center, covering a total area of 40 square kilometers. It stretches 10 km from Shuangcha River and the Small Canyon in the north to the Houqianzi Front Bridge in the south. The Xiao Luan River flows from north to south at the bottom of the canyon, dividing it into two distinct landforms. The eastern part belongs to the foothills of the Yan Mountains, where steep high mountains are covered with pristine secondary birch forests, while the western part is part of the Inner Mongolia Plateau’s foothills, featuring rolling hills covered with various wildflowers, mountain elms, mountain apricots, and sparse birch forests.

The Grand Canyon is rich in vegetation and diverse in species, serving as a breeding ground for roe deer, black pheasants, and mountain chickens. The Xiao Luan River at the bottom of the canyon is home to the extremely rare and precious fine-scaled fish. Emperor Kangxi once tasted it and wrote a poem in praise: “The winding Yixun River holds the yicui tail fish; their fine scales prickle in autumn, mouths agape in the current. They enrich the imperial menu beyond compare, while fishermen’s records seem too spare. One must also ask Zhang Han what he recalls—what memories stir within?”
