Tianjia Courtyard in Zhangjiajie is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.

Tianjia Courtyard in Zhangjiajie, known as the “Old Courtyard!” due to its great age and long history, was first built in the fourth year of the Qingli era during the Northern Song Dynasty (1045 AD). It is a traditional Tujia-style enclosed courtyard house with firewalls, integrating Tujia gardens and stilted buildings. As a typical residence of the Tujia people (also called the Bizi Ka), it is the best-preserved Tujia architectural structure surviving in western Hunan and even across China to date. It is hailed as a “living fossil” of Tujia dwellings in the region, earning reputations such as the “Thousand-Year-Old Tujia Royal Mansion” and the “No. 1 Residence in Western Hunan.” In 2013, it was approved by the State Council as part of the seventh group of “Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level.”
