The 2013 Traditional Opera Arts Festival, with the theme "Conveying Emotions in the Mountain City – Art Encounters Happiness," includes not only excellent local traditional opera groups but also a special invitation to the "Yongding Hakka Tulou Art Troupe" from Fujian. From March 15 to 17, 2013, they will present the large-scale original ecological Hakka cultural song and dance performance "The Charm of Tulou" at the Miaoli County Dome Stadium in a grand performance!

Fujian Tulou is a unique and remarkable residential architectural wonder in the world. It is renowned for its long history, diverse forms, grand scale, ingenious structure, comprehensive functionality, and rich cultural connotations. It is also a unique product of the Hakka people who, after migrating from the Yellow River basin to Yongding, further developed the ancient Central Plains earthen architecture. Yongding County is the birthplace and main region of the Fujian Tulou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is also one of Fujian Province’s "Eight Major Tourism Brands." There are currently over 20,000 existing Hakka Tulou structures in Yongding, accounting for more than 70% of all Fujian Tulou. Among the "Six Groups and Four Buildings" of Fujian Tulou listed in the "World Heritage List" in 2008, Yongding includes "Three Groups and Two Buildings." Major Hakka Tulou complexes in Yongding include the Hongkeng Tulou Cluster, Nanxi Tulou Cluster, Gaobei Tulou Cluster, and Chuxi Tulou Cluster, among others.

"The Charm of Tulou" takes the developmental history of Hakka Tulou as its main thread and the lifestyle and folk customs of the Yongding Hakka Tulou people as its subject matter. It employs various artistic techniques such as graceful song and dance, situational reenactments, original ecological Hakka mountain songs, and outstanding Hakka folk song and dance performances to showcase the cultural essence and spiritual depth of Hakka culture. The program is divided into four major chapters: "Pioneering Hardships," "Axe Opening the Heavens," "Hakka Elegance," and "Fame Across the Seas." These reflect the poetic years during which the Hakka ancestors settled in the mountainous regions of western Fujian, built tulou, struggled mightily, and forged ahead, using performing arts to recreate the arduous history of the Hakka forebears.

This performance session uses a ticket-request entry system. Ticket requests are scheduled for March 2 and March 3, 2013, starting at 8:00 AM at the west gate of the Dome Stadium. Each person may request up to 4 tickets, and quantities are limited—first come, first served. The public is welcome to come and enjoy the show!
