Meijiang Scenic Area

Meijiang Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a national geopark.

Meijiang Scenic Area is located in the northwest of Lianyuan City, 30 kilometers from Lantian Town. It covers a total area of 108 square kilometers. Situated 45 kilometers from Bowue Cave in Lengshuijiang and 50 kilometers from Loudi City, it lies at the center of Hunan’s tourism network and on the national tourism route, offering convenient transportation and a uniquely advantageous location. The scenic area features over four hundred attractions: including 76 first-tier, 126 second-tier, and 226 third-tier sites. These are distributed across ten major scenic zones: Guanyin Cliff, Cangjun Cave, Ancient Shenzhou, Saihai, Longquan Gorge, Huangluowan, Xianglu Mountain, Immortal’s Mansion, Dajiangkou, and Immortal Village.

Meijiang spans a total area of 136.64 square kilometers, encompassing mountains, water bodies, caves, peaks, rocks, springs, waterfalls, cliffs, steep walls, deep pits, and karst lakes. It showcases structural landform types such as folds, faults, and nodes. Longquan Gorge, Cangjun Cave, and Huangluowan are products of the Quaternary period, featuring characteristics and markers of early-stage karst landform development. They differ from the Stone Forest in Lunan and Zhangjiajie, offering high aesthetic value and significant scientific research merit for karst landforms. Immortal’s Mansion features caves within caves, with waterfalls inside. Xianglu Mountain presents eight vivid scenes in a single rock formation. Longquan Gorge alternates between dead ends and sudden turns, culminating in a breathtaking “sky gate” at its end. The Lotus Spring at Guanyin Cliff connects underground with Saihai Lake, while the beautiful, winding Meijiang River ties all the scenic wonders together like a jade ribbon. At Meijiang, you can view an imperial mausoleum, two picturesque lakes, three rock gates, four green oases, five temples, six grand waterfalls, a seven-li gorge, eight hundred unique peaks, the winding Meijiang River, and ten stunning sights. A colorful Meijiang Tourism and Cultural Arts Festival is held annually at the end of September.

Ancient Shenzhou is a major highlight of the scenic area. Located within the Saihai–Longquan Gorge zone, it is a large karst cave in Meijiang Park, stretching 28,000 meters in total, with over 3,000 meters already explored, featuring more than twenty spacious and grand cave chambers. It is known for its towering chambers, unique attractions, and magnificent presence. The cave consists of seventeen chambers, including “Founding Ceremony,” “Five Lakes and Four Seas,” “Penglai Island,” “Continental Bridge of All Nations,” “China’s No. 1 Stone Waterfall,” “Milky Way in Heaven,” “Potala Palace,” and “Gobi Desert Beyond the Frontier.”

Meijiang is a natural zoo, especially rich in wild pheasants. Legend has it that a hunter once hunted on Zhuyun Peak all day and only managed to catch a single wild pheasant. As evening fell, due to some magical obstruction, he couldn’t find his way back. He had no choice but to spend the night on a small flat area atop Zhuyun Peak. He built a bonfire to ward off the cold, and as hunger set in, he began roasting the pheasant over the fire. Just as it became fragrant, a scholar dressed in white approached. The scholar came up to the fire, took the pheasant from the hunter’s hands, and began eating it. When the hunter grew angry, the scholar tore half of it back and handed it to him, saying, “Hunt half, eat half, or you’ll never find your way home,” before disappearing. At that moment, the hunter clearly saw the path back. Since then, hunters in the Meijiang region have developed the habit of bringing roasted pheasant when venturing out or cooking it in the mountains.

Nowadays, the popular roasted pheasant in the Meijiang area is cooked over firewood or charcoal, seasoned with snow salt, ginger powder, pepper ash, and chili powder. The flavor is particularly delicious, fragrant, tender, and delicate.

Meijiang Scenic Area boasts beautiful scenery, unique landscapes, and a comprehensive array of natural features, integrating mountains, water, caves, peaks, rocks, springs, waterfalls, cliffs, steep walls, deep pits, and karst lakes. Its landscape is picturesque and has been famous since ancient times, revered as the foremost of the “Eight Scenic Spots of Anhua.” It stands as one of China’s classic representations of natural beauty and poetic artistic conception.
