Fireflies Light Up the Sky Along the Kawazaka River in Early Summer Japan

With early summer here, travelers don’t have to limit their firefly experiences to Taiwan—visiting Japan also offers the breathtaking sight of fireflies dancing across the sky. Since 2009, during the latter half of May to the first half of June, Yamaguchi City in Japan has hosted a one-week firefly viewing event along the Sasagawa River. This year’s event will also take place from May 30 to June 7, when visitors can see thousands of Genji fireflies—designated as a natural monument of Japan—fluttering and sparkling alongside the Sasagawa River.

The Sasagawa River flows through the city center of Yamaguchi, which has the charm of an ancient capital, and its riverside is one of the city’s most iconic cherry blossom viewing spots. In spring, around 200 cherry trees line both sides of the river, dressing the Sasagawa in vibrant blossoms. During the flowering season, the surrounding area also features nighttime illumination, creating a dreamy and beautiful night scene. By early summer, visitors can participate in the firefly viewing week. Aside from enjoying the stunning sight of twinkling lights, various activities are also held around the Sasagawa River on the Saturday of the firefly viewing week. Additionally, the local firefly conservation association’s office mysteriously revealed that visitors will witness completely different beautiful scenes whether the day is sunny or rainy.
