Early Summer Firefly Watching Along Sakawa River in Japan – Fireflies Dance Across the Sky on Sakawa River

With early summer arriving, travelers can enjoy not only fireflies in Taiwan but also the breathtaking sight of thousands of them lighting up the night sky in Japan. Since 2009, the city of Yamaguchi in Japan has held a one-week firefly-watching event along the Sakawa River from late May to early June. This year’s event will also run from May 30 to June 7. During this time, visitors can witness thousands of Genji fireflies—designated as a Natural Monument of Japan—dancing gracefully above the shimmering waters of the Sakawa River.

The Sakawa River flows through the city of Yamaguchi, which boasts an ancient capital charm. The riverside area is one of the most iconic cherry blossom viewing spots in Yamaguchi. In spring, approximately 200 cherry trees line both sides of the river, creating a spectacular floral display that decorates the Sakawa River in vibrant blooms. During the cherry blossom season, the surrounding areas also host nighttime illuminations, offering a magical and dreamy nightscape. Come early summer, visitors can participate in the Firefly Watching Week. Aside from admiring the enchanting glow of the fireflies, various events are also held around the Sakawa River on the Saturday of the event week. Additionally, the local Firefly Conservation Association’s office has revealed a little secret: visitors may witness entirely different yet equally stunning sights depending on whether it's sunny or rainy when viewing the fireflies.
