Known locally as Yangshi, Yangjiatan in Lianyuan City is a renowned ancient town with a history of over a thousand years in central Hunan. It was once a key transportation hub at the junction of Xiangxiang, Shaoyang, and Anhua. The towering Longshan Mountain rises high above the clouds, while the meandering Sunshui River flows gently eastward. Historical records indicate that the ancient town of Liandao was located in what is now the Yangjiatan area during the Han Dynasty. A market settlement had already formed here during the Wude era (618–626) of Emperor Gaozu of Tang, and by modern times, it had become a hub of culture and talent, producing many notable figures. The old folk rhyme “All kinds of performances at Nanyue Mountain, vibrant colors in Yangjiatan” is a testament to its former prosperity.

The prosperity of Yangjiatan is closely tied to the rise of the Xiang Army. In 1851, the Taiping Rebellion broke out, and the rebel forces quickly occupied half of China, dealing a heavy blow to the Qing rulers. To save the dynasty from crisis, Zeng Guofan, then Vice Minister of Personnel, was ordered by the emperor to organize local militias (known as “tuanlian”) in his hometown (now Heye Town, Shuangfeng County) to resist the Taiping Army. Yangjiatan, less than a hundred li from Heye, saw many young men join the army. They fought alongside Zeng Guofan across battlefields, distinguishing themselves through extraordinary talent and bravery and rising to positions of power and prestige. The Liu generals of Yangjiatan once enjoyed nationwide fame, with notable figures recorded in the Draft History of Qing including: Liu Yuexiao, Liu Lianjie, Liu Yuejun, Liu Tenghong, Liu Tenghe, and Liu Yuexin. After returning home in glory, these military and civil officials built lavish residences, leading to a spectacular concentration of mansions in Yangjiatan. Starting from Shengmei Bridge in Yangjiatan and following the winding Sunshui River downstream, structures such as the Old Liu Residence, Dehou Hall, Cunyang Hall, Cunhou Hall, Guangyuan Hall, Peilan Hall, Shishan Hall, Yungui Hall, and Jingyang Hall stand like an imposing chain of sculptures. Walking along the smooth flagstone paths and entering these time-worn ancestral halls and courtyards, one is transported back in time, with vivid images of the famous Xiang Army generals coming to life.

The Former Residences of Famous Xiang Army Generals in Yangjiatan embody a profound cultural legacy and are now attracting global attention with their unique charm. Protecting Yangjiatan’s historic architecture is of great significance and an urgent task. It is believed that in the near future, the Former Residences of Famous Xiang Army Generals in Yangjiatan will gradually regain their historical grandeur and once again showcase their former brilliance.
