Hongqi Residential Compound

The Hongqi Residential Compound is a cultural heritage site protected by Hunan Province.

The Hongqi Residential Compound (a model communist village) is located in Yuping Village, Shanjia Township, Lianyuan City, Hunan Province. Built in 1958 during the Great Leap Forward, its walls are covered with Maoist slogans, reflecting the history of an era. Such architecture is extremely rare nationwide and holds high cultural heritage value. It covers an area of 4,500 square meters and consists of six parallel bungalows.

In 1958, the Hongqi Commune of Lianyuan County demolished over 300 main rooms and more than 40 central halls to build collective dormitories and a public canteen, completing the project by the end of the following year. The building complex covers an area of 4,500 square meters. It consists of six parallel bungalows, each featuring 12 porch pillars, 24 rooms in total — with 20 identically sized rooms arranged symmetrically on both sides, and 4 larger rooms serving as offices and meeting rooms. A straight central corridor runs through the middle of the buildings. The entire residential compound has a total of 144 rooms, all uniformly structured.
