Zhongnan University of Economics and Law

Zhongnan University of Economics and Law is a comprehensive public university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. It primarily focuses on economics, law, and management, while also encompassing nine major disciplines including philosophy, literature, history, science, engineering, and art. The university is part of the national “211 Project” and a key institution under the “985 Project Innovation Platform for Advantageous Disciplines.” The university currently has two campuses: the Nanhu Campus, located by the picturesque South Lake, and the Shouyi Campus, situated near the historic Yellow Crane Tower.

With profound historical roots and steady, rapid development, the university traces its origins to the Central Plains University, established in 1948 under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping as the First Secretary of the Central Plains Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, with Chen Yi, the Second Secretary, serving as the Director of the Preparatory Committee. In 1953, during the nationwide restructuring of higher education institutions, the School of Economics and the School of Law from Central Plains University were combined with finance and law departments from multiple universities across six provinces in central-south China to form the Zhongnan Institute of Finance and Economics and the Zhongnan Institute of Politics and Law, respectively. In 1958, these two institutes, along with the Zhongnan Institute of Political and Legal Cadres and the Law Department of Wuhan University, merged to become Hubei University. During the Cultural Revolution, the education sector suffered severe setbacks, and in 1971, Hubei University was renamed Hubei College of Finance and Economics. In January 1978, with approval from the Hubei Provincial Government, the college was renamed Hubei Institute of Finance and Economics and became one of the first institutions to resume undergraduate and graduate student admissions. In January 1979, with approval from the State Council, the institute came under the dual leadership of the Ministry of Finance and the Hubei Provincial Government, with the former taking the lead. In December 1984, the Law Department of Hubei Institute of Finance and Economics was used as the foundation to re-establish the Zhongnan Institute of Politics and Law, which came under the administration of the Ministry of Justice. In September 1985, Hubei Institute of Finance and Economics was renamed Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics, with Deng Xiaoping personally inscribing the university’s name. In February 2000, with approval from the State Council based on the Ministry of Education’s proposal, Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics and Zhongnan Institute of Politics and Law merged, officially forming the new Zhongnan University of Economics and Law on May 26, 2000. In September 2005, the university was included in the national “211 Project” as a key construction institution; in June 2011, it joined the “985 Project Innovation Platform for Advantageous Disciplines” as a key development university. In October 2012, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and the People’s Government of Hubei Province formally signed an agreement to jointly support the development of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law.
