Gucheng Hanjiang National Wetland Park

Gucheng Hanjiang National Wetland Park is a national-level wetland park.

Hanjiang Wetland Park is located east of Chengguan Town in Gucheng, west of the Han River, and between the North River and the South River. It is surrounded by water on three sides, with the section of the Han River adjacent to the planned area stretching approximately 10 kilometers. The wetland features a well-developed water system, lush vegetation, and abundant bird species, covering a total area of 21.88 square kilometers. Its ecosystem is intact and holds high conservation and tourism value.

The park boasts a beautiful ecological environment. Surrounded by the Han River and the North and South Rivers, it offers fragrant lotus ponds, birds in lively play, and fishermen’s songs at dusk. It also has profound cultural heritage. Ancient tales such as “Shennong’s Five Grains,” “Immortal’s Ancient Ferry,” “Crystal-Clear Fen River,” and “Moonlit Back Lake” have been passed down for millennia. The “Eight Scenic Spots of the Wetland” present picturesque views, complementing the old street’s traditional architecture and the Three Gods Temple. The location is conveniently accessible. Nestled to the west of the Taoist sacred Mount Wudang, to the south of the primeval Shennongjia Forest, and to the east of Xiangyang’s ancient Longzhong—home of the Three Kingdoms—the park is traversed by the Fuyin (Han-Shi) Expressway, the Xiangyu Railway, and the Wuhan–Fuyang Railway loop. Xiangyang Airport and the under-construction Wudang Mountain Airport are both within a one-hour drive.

The development of Hanjiang National Wetland Park aims to establish an urban green heart, conserve water sources, regulate the climate, and create a harmonious habitat for humans and wildlife. It will become a beautiful landmark of the river valley’s new city and a key node in the Ecological and Cultural Tourism Circle of Western Hubei.

The well-preserved ecological environment of Hanjiang Wetland serves as a natural ecological barrier for Gucheng County, offering multiple ecological services such as flood control and water storage, climate regulation, improved urban environmental quality, landscape beautification, safeguarding the ecological security of Chengguan Town, and promoting harmonious socioeconomic development. With its unique geographical advantages, long-established industrial characteristics, rare ecological value, and profound cultural heritage, Hanjiang National Wetland Park has been incorporated into Gucheng County’s urban development plan. It currently features “six major functional zones”: the Shennong Farming Experience Zone, the Wetland Habitat Sightseeing Zone, the Hanjiang Culture Exhibition Zone, the Wetland Science Education Zone, the Wetland Ecological Conservation Zone, and the Wetland Management Service Zone.
