The former residence of Wang Shijie is a cultural relic protection unit of Hubei Province.

Former Residence of Wang Shijie

Located in Huitouling Village, Baini Town, Chongyang County, and built during the Qing Dynasty. Wang Shijie (1891–1981), a native of Chongyang, studied mining and metallurgy at Beiyang University in Tianjin before dropping out in 1911. He later studied in the United Kingdom and France, earning a Bachelor of Political Economy from the University of London in 1917 and a Doctor of Law from the University of Paris in France in 1920. After returning to China, he taught at Peking University and co-founded the weekly magazine Modern Review with Hu Shi and others. He then entered politics, serving successively as Director of the Legal Affairs Bureau of the Kuomintang government, the first President of Wuhan University, Minister of Education, Minister of Propaganda of the Kuomintang Central Committee, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Secretary-General of the Executive Yuan, Member of the Executive Yuan’s Political Affairs Commission, and President of the Academia Sinica. The residence faces north and features a three-courtyard layout with over twenty rooms of various sizes. The side walls are equipped with fireproofing gables, and the total area is about 500 square meters. Wang Shijie had a significant impact on modern China’s education, politics, diplomacy, relations between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, and cross-strait affairs. His former residence holds high commemorative and educational value, and also provides substantial research value for the study of traditional dwellings in the region.
