Huanggang High School of Hubei Province, abbreviated as “Huanggao,” was originally founded in 1904 as Huangzhou Prefecture Middle School. In June 1949, it was officially renamed “Huanggang High School.” In 1953, it was among the first group of schools designated as a provincial key high school by the Hubei Provincial Government, and in 1993, it became one of the first provincial model schools recognized by the Hubei Provincial Government. For over a hundred years, Huanggang High School has nurtured a large number of talented individuals for the nation. Among its alumni are Dong Biwu, former Acting President of China; Hu Feng, a renowned literary theorist; Shu Degan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and winner of the First Class Prize in National Natural Science; He Zuming, chief designer of the carrier rocket system for the Chang’e project; musician Wang Yuanping; and Qiu Bo, an athlete who won four gold medals at the Asian Games. These are just a few of the many outstanding talents the school has produced.

Since the reform and opening-up, Huanggang High School has fully implemented the Party’s educational policies, vigorously promoted quality-oriented education, and strived to advance teaching reforms. With steady progress, practical innovation, and continuous improvement, the school has achieved remarkable success in education and teaching, excelling in educational research and reform. It has maintained a college entrance examination enrollment rate of over 98% and an acceptance rate to key universities of around 75%. Over 700 students have been recommended to prestigious universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University for further study. In various national secondary school subject competitions, more than 3,000 students have won national-level awards, over 200 have entered the National Winter Camp, and more than 100 have been selected for the National Training Team. Sixteen students, including Lin Qiang, Ku Chao, and Wang Song, have won a total of 19 medals in international mathematics, physics, and chemistry Olympiads.

Over the years, Party committees and governments at all levels have shown great care and support for the construction and development of Huanggang High School. State and Party leaders such as then-Premier Li Peng, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference -, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission Liu Huaqing, Vice Premier -, and member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee - have visited the school for inspection or inscribed words of encouragement. Three Ministers of Education—Liu Xiyao, Chen Zhili, and Zhou Ji—have also provided guidance to the school. Huanggang High School has been awarded over 20 national-level honors, including the “National May 1 Labor Certificate,” “National Civilized Unit,” “Advanced Collective in the Education System,” “National Advanced School in Moral Education,” “National Outstanding School in Implementing the School Sports Work Regulations,” and “National Advanced Unit in School Democratic Management.” It is hailed as “a banner of ordinary high schools.”

Huanggang High School has produced three distinguished teachers of Hubei Province, 11 provincial and ministerial-level experts, 27 distinguished teachers of Huanggang, 36 senior teachers with special titles, and a large number of outstanding teachers at the provincial and municipal levels. The school currently has 271 faculty and staff members, including seven senior teachers with special titles and 107 senior teachers. There are 3,480 students enrolled.
